Is skiing in China worth it?
For about half of the people who ask us: absolutely, and it'll be the best-value ski trip you've taken. For the other half: no, and we'd rather tell you now than after you've booked. Here's which half you're in.
Come — you'll love it
Groomer and mileage skiers. Chongli's corduroy is Olympic-grade, lift queues are short outside holidays, and a $42 weekday pass buys hardware that costs $90 in Niseko. If your perfect day is 25,000 vertical metres of carving, China is underpriced for you.
Value hunters. A mid-range 7-night week runs ≈ $873 per person in Chongli against $1,504+ in Japan — passes, hotels, food, transport, all of it cheaper. The calculator has the line items.
Powder pioneers. Altay is the real thing: 1,466 m of lift-served vertical at Jikepulin, cold dry snow, FWT qualifier terrain, and nobody on it. It takes two flights and a mountain road, infrastructure is young, and stats date fast — the people this excites rather than deters are exactly who it's for.
Japan veterans. If you've done Niseko and Hakuba twice each, China is the adjacent adventure: same flight radius, new mountains, a culture layer your ski trips haven't had, and Christmas weeks that aren't peak season.
Skip it — you'd regret the booking
Deep-snowfall chasers. Nothing in China gets 10–15 m seasons. Hokkaido does. If untracked refills every second morning are the point of your trip, book Japan and don't look back — our own comparison says so in a table.
Nightlife-first travellers. Après in China is hotpot, maybe a beer, and an early gondola. Thaiwoo has a bar street in miniature; nowhere has an izakaya crawl or an Austrian umbrella bar. If the evening matters as much as the skiing, you want Japan or the Alps.
Zero-patience-for-apps travellers. China runs on QR codes, Chinese-language mini-programs and passport gates. Our guides (or our concierge) remove most of the friction, but if "setup evening before the trip" already sounds like a dealbreaker, believe yourself.
Decided? Next steps
Start with the 10 best resorts to pick a region, run the visa checker (50 countries enter free, most through 2026), check when to go, and follow a ready-made itinerary.
